Do you remember how the giant from Redmond got into console gaming? Console was released first on 15th November in North America. Do you wonder what does the X in the Xbox name stands for? Story started in 1998 when some of the Microsoft engineers constructed the first ever Microsoft console prototype, but based on the Microsoft Windows. X comes from their DirectX libraries! They wanted to create the console which can compete in stores with upcoming Playstation 2. Microsoft was trying to take another piece of the cake and elevate the concern to the next level. Now, you can see how the prototype was looking!
But Microsoft was romancing with Sony and Sega before the release of Xbox. They wanted to create and sell Sony the specific OS for a new device, but in a result Windows CE was used in the Dreamcast console. First PlayStation was succesful without any help!
We think that this prototype was completely awesome and it’s looking even better than the retail one. But… it can be not as dustproof and scratchproof. And the controller is very strange, playing without the analog may be hard.
It was the second console which was produced by the American company after one of the biggest fails in this industry – Apple Pippin. It failed that much that you even haven’t heard nothing about the Apple and Bandai device.
The Xbox was officially announced at the Game Developers Conference on March 10, 2000. Audience was truly amazed by the possibilties which were brought by the console. But the rest of the community got to know about the new child of Microsoft at CES 2001 in Las Vegas on January 3, 2001 and Microsoft used the pesonality of professional wrestler – Dwayne “The Rock” – Johnson.
But what were the heart of the new competition killer console? What makes it different than the traditional scheme? Why nearly 25 millions bought this piece of plastic, metal and silicon?
The first thing is the 3.5 inch HDD (like in the PC!) used for storing the game saves and the content from the Xbox Live service. Yes, Xbox is the very first console which does not need any memory card like the olders. It makes many things more simple.
The Xbox was the first gaming product to feature Dolby Interactive Content-Encoding Technology, which allows real-time Dolby Digital encoding in game consoles. Previous game consoles could only use Dolby Digital 5.1 during non-interactive “cut scene” playback. So imagine what I felt, when I got my first Xbox, plug it into the big plasma screen and giant home cinema set. Really: AWE-SO-ME!
Console is the biggest one in its generation and it’s kinda heavy. Just because the PC based architecture. Microsoft have done many things to complicate the life of the modders, but fortunately or not, there are several another dashboards, applications etc. The most knows softmod is the Xbox Media Center which makes your console the true center of the entertainment.
Launch-era Xbox gaming units were made in Hungary and the controllers made mainly in Indonesia.
The Xbox consists of a standard AV cable which provides composite video and monaural or stereo audio to Televisions geared up with RCA inputs. European Xboxes also included an RCA jack to SCART converter block in addition to the standard AV cable.
The Xbox runs a custom-made running system which was as soon as believed to be a modified version of the Windows 2000 kernel. It exposes APIs similar to APIs discovered in Microsoft Windows, such as DirectX 8.1. The system software application might have been based on the Windows NT architecture that powered Windows 2000; it is not a modified variation of either.
